Single heart-shaped leaf, green on the upper surface and usually reddish or purplish beneath, sits horizontally above the soil surface on a slender stalk.

Grow from tubers
Naturally occurring in well drained soils, in open forests and woodlands, occasional in closed forests. Prefer rich humus soils.
