Small Forest Birds |

The small forest birds will generally be found feeding on the ground, on grasses or in low bushes. The medium sized birds(included here) will be found roosting higher up in trees. These birds may be seen on open ground bordering forest areas but rarely out on open plains areas.

Brown Thornbill, Acanthiza pusilla, Family Acanthizidae (Thornbills, Scrubwrens, Heathwrens, Gerygones and Whiteface) This bird will respond by coming for a look if you imitate its call or make soft squeaky sounds. (AK)

Superb Blue Wren, male in breeding plumage, Malurus cyaneus, Family Maluridae. These boys have been labelled as the least faithful males in the bird world! (KB)

Superb Blue Wren, female, Malurus cyaneus, Family Maluridae. Females have a pale greenish gloss, which is absent in young birds, on an otherwise brown tail. (JM)

Superb Blue Wren, non-breeding male, Malurus cyaneus, Family Maluridae. He has a lightly blue tail which tells him from a female. (KB)

Noisy Miner, Manorina melanocephala, Family Meliphagidae (Honeyeaters). A native, it is almost as destructive as the introduced Common or Indian Myna, ganging up on smaller birds and ousting them from their territories. (KB)

Olive-backed Oriole, Oriolus sagittatus, Family Oriolidae (Orioles). A spring migrant to this area it comes from further north in Australia. Often heard before it is seen. (KP)

Silvereye, Zosterops lateralis, Family Zosteropidae. (White-eyes) Silvereyes are one of Australia's smallest birds yet some undertake long migrations from Tasmania to Queensland. (KP)

Sacred Kingfisher, Todiramphus sanctus, Family Halcyonidae, (Tree Kingfishers). A small bird with a loud and carryng ek, ek, ek, ek, call. (AK)

Spotted Pardalote, Pardalotus punctatus, Family Pardalotidae. A small insectivorous and nectivorious bird that nests in tunnels it excavates in earth banks or sometimes in tree hollows or artifical structures. (KP)

Fan-tailed Cuckoo, Cacomantis flabelliformis, Cuculidae (Cuckoos) window-hit, but flew away successfully. Showing its back and tail markings. These cuckoos eat caterpillars & insects. Their yellow eye-ring distinguishes them from the similar but smaller Brush Cuckoo. (KP)

Pallid Cuckoo Juvenile, Cacomantis pallidus, Family Cuculidae (Cuckoos).In the past it was often referred to by the name Brainfever Bird because of it monotonous calling, often day AND night. (KP)

Crested or Eastern Shrike-tit, Falcunculus frontatus, Family Pachycephalidae, the only member of the sub-family Falcunculinae. A bird mostly discovered by the sound of tearing bark as it searches for insects underneath. (KP)

White-throated Treecreeper, (male) Cormobates leucophaea, Family Climacteridae (Australasian Treecreepers). They build their nests in hollow branches or stumps or splits in tree trunks. (AK)

Willie Wagtail, Rhipidura leucophrys. The reason for the wag in Willy's tail is not known for sure and guesses are - to disturb prey - to counterbalance the front and upper body movements - to signal its vigilance to predators. (KP)
