Perennial herb. Grows from a tuberous root. Usually has only 1 stem with 1 flower at the extreme. Plant dies down after flowering. Often grow in small colonies, Stem colour varies from green to deep red.

One flower per plant. Up to 40mm across. Colour white with green column. Lip is 3 lobed and yellow to orange tipped. Lip is covered in several rows of hard white protrusions on stalks known as calli. Inner part of tongue can vary in colour from white to pink to deep red.
